memo to recipient Beerot Ytzhak
For the past year I have been learning at a large mainstream Israeli yeshiva called Yeshivas HaRan however what's unique about the Ran is that it has a division of approximately 40 Russian Israeli avreichim some in their first few years after becoming religious but a decent chunk of them learning there close to 20 years. A lot of these people are 40 and older (all of them obviously baaley teshuva). The program is headed by Rav Polishchuk who is also of Russian descent and a huge talmid chocham.
For learning two sedorim a day from 9am-1:15pm and 3:20pm-7pm they receive two monthly paycheks: 2,000 NIS (roughly $600) from the Yeshivas haRan and anywhere between 500-2,000 NIS from Rav Polishchuk based on their seniority and contribution to the program…as you can do the math the most senior important avreichim receive around $1,000 per month.
However, recent events have caused a major strain on the budget. First majority of program's funds have historically come from Russia and Ukraine...obviously this channel has been getting hit harder and harder.
Starting next year the administration has notified the avreichim that their stipend from Rav Polishchuk is being suspended indefinitely. As you can imagine for Russian avreichim in their late 40s and older it's not easy to try to leave a place where they have been for 20 years in search of a different better paying kollel.
I spoke with the executive director and he told me that stipends for the one semester is roughly $60,000.
We are making a plea to people that can relate to the cause...who appreciate the light and Torah scholarship of baaley teshuvas and can contribute to help out during these turbulent times.
